Well of course you have. Then why did you cringe with the title of this post? Because you probably realize how incredibly daunting the Bible can be–you who wrestle with it week to week to make it sensible to others. Those others can maintain the comfortable fiction that the Bible is a plain and simple text for plain and simple people, as accessible as Chicken Soup for the Soul or The Purpose Driven Life.

Today is the official release date for Mystically Wired. It’s a book about intimacy, a hallmark of the spirituality I learned from John Wimber, captured in the intimate worship songs of Vineyard. But, as the sub-title (Exploring New Realms in Prayer) infers, the book explores new forms of prayer, new ways of praying, and new experiences mediated by those new ways. Which, of course, are mainly old ways, forgotten, neglected or left unexplored thanks to that great blinding influence: prejudice.

So I need to explain something. I’ve been to the same place for vacation for the past 28 years. I know, boring as the post office. Which is exactly the way I like vacation. Maybe as a result, vacation clears space in my head. Maybe for God to speak. Several years ago, I’m guessing now but 1998 or 1999, I’m praying on vacation and a voice gets through saying, “Pay attention to what I’m doing among liberals.”
